Who is Michele Weeks?

I am Draper City Council-member Michele Weeks and I am a candidate for Utah State Representative – District 51.  I know picking a candidate in any election can be difficult, so I invite you to read my bio and spend a few minutes getting to know me.

I graduated from Towson State University in Maryland with a degree in Mass Communications and started working in television, radio, and the movie industry soon after.  While building my career and working in New York City, I met an amazing man named Ken.  We married and moved across the country to Draper, Utah in 1999.  Draper is where we have built our life and our family for nearly two decades.

Ken and I have two wonderful boys, Josh and Christian, and our beloved dog Bernard.  Earlier this year, after 18 years of marriage, my husband Ken passed away from a massive heart attack.  It was a tremendously difficult experience for me and my boys.  Through this trial, I have become intimately aware of the need for affordable health care and insurance as well as the challenges faced by single mothers and fathers throughout our state.  I have been fortunate to be blessed with a family, friends, and a community that has helped me during this difficult time.  It is a blessing to have my two boys with me, especially since they are my biggest supporters.

Some of our favorite things about living in Draper are the beautiful hiking and biking trails in our city.  I also spend a lot of time with my dog Bernard at the Dayland Dog Park.  Another favorite past time of mine is playing a few holes at the South Mountain golf course.  I am also an avid skier.  Whenever the snow falls upon our splendid Wasatch Mountains, I relish taking my family and friends to visit our favorite ski resorts.

Our family has always loved the arts.  Both of my children devote time to audition and participate in the Draper Arts theater programs and visual arts competitions.  I support efforts to start a philharmonic orchestra and choir group in our community.  For many years, I was a board member of the Mrs. Draper pageant and I love supporting these young women as they work to obtain their goals.

I have worked hard to be a strong voice for residents in Draper and to support their needs as our community grows.  On the city council, I listen to citizens’ concerns and voice them at the city level.  I promise to continue listening at the state level and to ensure your voice is heard over the drone of special interests and lobbyists.  I would appreciate your vote to help make the changes we need in our community.  The changes you want.  I truly believe great government starts at the local and state level, by the voice of the people.
